"Q" IS FOR QUIET
May 07, 2019Part of “Anti-Inflammatory” living is taking care of your mind and sprit. Kale is good, and quiet time might be even better! We all need to step away from the noise and chaos on a regular basis in order to maintain balance. Our bodies can become overwhelmed, to the point of becoming physically unwell, when we are unable to quiet the chatter that keeps us tense and stressed. You might ask: How do I do this on a practical level, in the middle of my very busy life?? Start here:
-
Morning Routine: You’ve heard it said that if you “win the morning, you win the day,” right? Developing a peaceful morning routine that allows you to connect to your higher power, and to practice gratitude/mindfulness is one of the best habits to begin forming. Before the world gains access to you, regain access to your innermost self. Set your intentions for the day in a quiet place, with a quieted mind.
-
The Daily Walk: Shinrin-yoku, or "forest bathing” was developed in Japan and focuses on the health benefits of spending time under the canopy of a living forest. Just by walking in nature, our bodies become calmed, rejuvenated, and restored. So many of us operate out of our sympathetic nervous system: that “fight or flight” state of being—and staying stuck in that realm leads to widespread inflammation in our bodies. If you can find a park or nature trail, get out there and soak in the healing!
-
Step Away From The Screens: This one is tough. I know, I get it. I, too, am a glutton for “liking and swiping!” Our phones often feel like a lifeline to the world around us….but in reality, they can be more like a chain we drag around all day! Start setting boundaries around your screen time, just like you might do for your kids. Perhaps the phone is off during dinner, or before the kids go to bed. Perhaps you shut it off a few hours before you turn in for the night, or maybe Sundays are “technology-free” days. Whatever you decide, create quiet time away from your phone and other devices.
Learning to embrace the quiet in today’s world is a tall order, but well worth the effort and intention required to do so. As you calm your mind, your body becomes more calm….inflammation is reduced, and balance is restored. Here’s to finding your quiet space today….
