FREEDOM from "The Post Peeps Apocalypse"
Apr 15, 2022Historically speaking, the space after Easter and Spring Break usually proves to be a doozy! The fallout from chocolate covered bunnies, jelly beans, and vacations with beaches and margaritas leaves many of us dazed and confused as we try and re-focus our wellness goals. I’m unaffectionately referring to this time period as the “Post Peeps Apocalypse.” (Peeps: those marshmallowy, artificial flavory, syrup and sugary insulin bombs). I’m not gonna lie—I love them, too.
If you feel like your goals have been totally derailed because of sugar/carb/alcohol overdosing, I have great news: You are only 1 meal away from getting right back on track. Even if the number on the scale has gone up, most of that is likely water weight and will fall off within a few days. Fun fact: Your body responds more quickly to subtle nutritional changes more than any other intervention. Phew! Amazing, right? Your body is ready to resume your usual routine and will step right back into the rhythm it had before the Easter Bunny showed up. You can set yourself free....and fast.
Don’t do anything extreme. Don’t put yourself on a juice cleanse, or drastically slash your calories, or go on a fast. Relax. Breathe. The real battle here is the one in your mind: That obnoxious voice telling you how badly you’ve “failed,” how far off course you are, and how long it’s going to take to undo the damage. Here’s my advice for what to do after the Easter Bunny has left the building:
-
If there is any candy left in the house, toss it in the big, nasty trash can in the garage….so that it’s REALLY gone.
-
Stop punishing yourself. Enough, already. You are a hard working wellness warrior and you are allowed to indulge from time to time.
-
Make sure your fridge and pantry are stocked with your nutritious essentials, and with ingredients for at least 3 days of meals and snacks. This will set you up for success.
-
Schedule at least 3 workouts on your calendar for this week. The reason is this: When we are wellness minded and staying active, we are more likely to eat well/nourish well….and visa versa. Breaking a good sweat has a way of getting us back on track. When we go to the effort of putting our bodies through a workout, we’re usually motivated to make great choices afterwards!
-
Lastly, hydrate more than usual for the next several days. Overindulging on sugar and alcohol dehydrates our bodies, making it harder to stay alert, energized, and shed excess weight. Squeeze 1/2 of a lemon in your water for a little liver detox, too!
