A VERY GOOD PLACE TO START...

Jan 04, 2022

Happy New Year! (Geez, that went by fast, huh?)

I watched a lot of movies over the holidays. One of my all-time faves is “The Sound of Music.” I’ve seen it at least 100 times, and I know every song by heart. If you’re a fan, you might remember the scene where Maria teaches the children how to sing….

“Let’s start at the very beginning; a very good place to start….when you read you begin with A, B, C. When you sing, you begin with Do, Re, Mi…”

Right there, on top of a mountain, she taught the children that they cannot expect to belt out a song until they understand the notes of a musical scale…the basics; the fundamentals. She poured a foundation so that they could build upon it, and then, in Maria’s words, “once you have these notes in your head, you can sing a million different tunes by mixing them up!”

Epic scene; epic movie! Now, this blog is not about movies and singing, but it IS about foundations.

90% of the women who reach out to me for help have 1 common goal: to lose weight and body fat. Most women have been on many diets, and have lost and regained weight many, many times. They reach out to me because they think that I will offer them yet another new program that will work this time….but what they don’t understand is that the weight gain and inability to lose unwanted body fat is a DOWNSTREAM symptom of an UPSTREAM issue. The spotlight needs to be taken off of the weight/fat, and placed at the root of the problem.

The foundation of any wellness goal, be it weight loss or healing from disease, is based on the principle of root cause resolution…you must first remove obstacles to cure.

Another way to think of this is: “clearing the muddy waters,” and it means that you must eliminate the biggest inflammatory culprits in your diet and lifestyle before moving on to your other goals. This is the “Do, Re, Mi” of health and wellness, and it cannot be bypassed.

There are some items that are non-negotiables for the general population, including the elimination of refined sugar, gluten, dairy, corn, soy, & alcohol, but there are others specific to each individual that may take more time to tease out. Lifestyle items to address include sleep, meditation, stress reduction, hydration, community connection, removal of toxic household/beauty products, and more….

You might be thinking: “Why do I need to remove gluten or dairy if I’m not allergic to these foods?” In truth, the items mentioned above often have widespread negative effects for most individuals. They create excessive inflammation, inhibit the body’s ability to detoxify, create nutritional deficiencies, and damage cells & tissues. Therefore, the goal of this removal process is not to lose weight; rather, to clear out the obstacles that are preventing your body from functioning properly…so that achieving a desired weight/body composition is even possible.

I coach my clients through the “clearing of the muddy waters” process, and would love to help you, too. Just reply to this email if you are in need of nutritional counseling.
